Bolgheri Wine Route

The Bolgheri "Strada del Vino"

Wine vacations are an appealing alternative to beach life. You only have to exit the resort and you are immediately on the route to the Bolgheri Strada del Vino, that will reveal to you the origins of Tuscany, its traditions and its latest innovations. Tastings in Bolgheri and in the wineries, a service you can book at the resort itself, are your key to the more recent past, a story of game and rural cuisine, made even more special by the wine-making progresses of the last few decades.

Sassicaia, now an international star, was the first Supertuscan wine, originating from the idea of Mario Incisa della Rocchetta to plant a vineyard of cabernet right here on the Tuscan wine route. He wished to make a break with the traditional Sangiovese grape, to produce a wine with all the rich bouquet and fragrances of French wines from the Bordeaux region. His experimental vineyard, which offered its first wine for sale in 1968, has now expanded to cover an area of no less than 1140 hectares, a unique natural paradise with a wealth of learning and tasting opportunities.

The fertile, productive soil and the typical microclimate of the hills near the sea enable the grapes to ripen with a particularly high sugar content; straw wines and very fresh whites are produced as well as the reds.

The wineries you will meet along the Bolgheri Strada del Vino include Ornellaia, Argentiera, Biserno, Antinori and Le Macchiole. Bottles and labels also available at our own wine bar, accompanied by finger food and dishes created especially to enhance the bouquet or body of the individual wines, succeeding to perfection thanks in part to the genuine goodness of natural produce with zero food miles.

The attractions worth visiting also include the Bolgheri Wine Museum, a new-concept cultural exhibit which also includes tasting and purchase opportunities.

All the senses will be involved and will accompany visitors on their journey of discover. Their guide will be Prof. Attilio Scienza, who will provide a historical survey of the origins of wine-making in the Etruscan and Roman periods, moving on to the Middle Ages and, finally, the 19C estates run by the Tuscan aristocracy.
